 History

The Colegio Hebreo Union is an educational institution founded by the Jewish community of Barranquilla in 1930. At first, it was called Colegio La Union. Its founder Adolfo Haftel, sought to offer an alternative education to Jewish families that were arriving to the city and felt the need to preserve their culture.

In 1930, a new building of Colegio La Union was opened in Las Delicias neighborhood, and a liberal – pluricultural educational proposal was promoted in which there were Jewish, Catholic and other students, who developed their potentials and values within a culture of respect.

In the 1940s and 1950s, Colegio La Unión strengthens its image, being recognized at the local, regional and national levels as a modern educational institution. On April 30, 1965, the Colegio Hebreo Union receives its official approval. In the next three decades, the academics strengthen and improved, along with the integral formation of students.

In the eighties and nineties, the school confirms its pluricultural educational proposal focused on the inclusive education of its students, cultivating both academic and artistic learning, reinforcing the values in our students. In this period of time, achievements such as the following stand out: the community supported social programs, which continue as a legacy to this day; the beginning of the academic-cultural exchange programs with Israel; the structuring of a vanguard pedagogical model, conceptual pedagogy; innovative pedagogical projects such as the Philosophy Congress, the Else Lasker-Schuler Literary Workshop, the Intercollegiate Story and Poetry Contest and the Intercollegiate Mathematics Contest.

At the same time, the Jewish Department consolidates the pedagogical proposal of both subjects:  Hebrew and Jewish History, with the support of foreign and local teachers. In the mid 90’s, the Institutional Educational Project (P.E.I.) was developed with the help of the entire educational community of the school, following the guidelines of the General Education Law.

At the beginning of the first decade of the 21st century, the school was headed towards an approach to bilingualism, increasing the hours of this subject, as well as teaching other subjects in English and the adoption of an international curriculum until grade twelve. At the same time, Horaa Mutemet (Teaching for Diversity), an innovative approach that fosters the development of students’ competences, is implemented as a pedagogical model. In the same way, the school obtains Accreditation of Excellence in Education and Training in its Access Level with the European Foundation for Quality Management EFQM (European Model of Educational Excellence).

On the other hand, the use of ICT in the teaching-learning process of students is initiated, together with the Horaa Mutemet pedagogical approach; which is later strengthened with the Blended Learning approach as a tool that allows it to be more dynamic and brought closer to the pedagogical approaches of the 21st Century. The First Entrepreneurship Fair of Grade Twelve students is organized.

In 2012, the training of entrepreneurial leaders was strengthened as a fundamental pillar of the institutional educational proposal. Entrepreneurship training is progressive with the development of projects including Helping Hands, Shuk, Ecobox, Eco-Hebreo and internal MUN.

Starting 2016, following the strategic plan of the board of directors, the school assumes new institutional challenges, among which are: the international accreditation with AdvancED and Bureau Veritas, the strengthening of a bilingual education, the consolidation and deepening of our pedagogical project “Formando líderes emprendedores “and the training in the XXI Century skills of the students. In pursuit of the achievement of institutional goals and the challenges outlined, progress is made in the development and consolidation of a pedagogical model based on three pillars: Entrepreneurship, Horaa Mutemet and Blended Learning, emphasizing our core values.

Letter: Jesús María Guillén

Music: Mordehai Yaacobi

Arrangements: Jorge Plá

Por la ruta sin fin del progreso

 juventud del Unión a marchar,

con el brío marcial en el gesto

y del canto el robusto compás.

 Conquistemos la meta fijada

día a día en constante avanzar,

que la vida es mirar adelante,

pasa a paso hacia el Norte ideal,

que la vida es mirar adelante

paso a paso hacia el Norte ideal.

 Nuestro canto es de alegría,

 nuestra voz de plenitud

 y llevamos por divisas

 Fuerza, Saber y Virtud.

 Adelante por la vida,

 adelante juventud,

 adelante por la vida, juventud.

School Director´s Welcome

Mónica Recio

Mónica Recio

Principal

Welcome to the website of the Colegio Hebreo Union, or C.H.U., as we know it. We are a private educational institution with more than 85 years, founded by the Jewish Community in Barranquilla to preserve the Jewish traditions and culture in our city.

Under the principles of Autonomy, Respect and Justice, we have maintained our standard of educating social and business entrepreneurial leaders.

We have highly trained teachers committed to academic excellence who, through a well-structured professional development plan, have access to the latest education strategies to prepare our students for the 21st Century.

We strengthen our values with the support of the Jewish Department in order to maintain a healthy culture where every stakeholder of the educational community enjoys a friendly and safe environment.

Our students obtain the ‘Bachiller Académico’ diploma at the end of the process in grade twelve and enjoy opportunities for their undergraduate studies in the best universities in the country and abroad. The trip to Israel at the end of 11th Grade prepares them to live in a multicultural environment and to be aware that they are citizens of the world who learn that “la vida es mirar adelante paso a paso hacia el norte ideal”, as expressed in the lyrics of our anthem.
